2019 WSU CUVEE
VINEYARD: DIONYSUS | WINEMAKERS: CALEB FOSTER AND ZACHARY GREEN | AVA: COLUMBIA VALLEY
About the Winery:
Ten generations of the Bookwalter family have been involved in American agriculture. But it was Jerry Bookwalter, generation nine and father of current company president John Bookwalter, who led the family into viticulture. After graduating from UC-Davis in 1963, Jerry spent 13 years farming in California’s San Joaquin Valley before moving his family in 1976 to the Tri-Cities in Washington State. Once there, he firmly stamped the Bookwalter name on the state’s nascent wine industry. From 1976 through 1982, Jerry helped manage the plantings of three iconic vineyards – Sagemoor, Bacchus and Dionysus. He eventually became vineyard manager of the famed Conner Lee Vineyard which remains the largest source of grapes for J. Bookwalter wines. And in 1982, he leveraged his vineyard connections and industry knowledge to start J. Bookwalter winery.
Jerry’s son John quite literally grew up in the vineyards of Eastern Washington, but left in the late 1980s to pursue a successful 10-year sales and marketing career with E&J Gallo, Winterbrook Beverage Group and Coors Brewing Co. In 1997, he returned to Richland with a keen understanding of the winery’s heritage and a clear vision for its future.
About the Winemaker:
Acclaimed winemaker Caleb Foster joined J. Bookwalter in 2014 as head winemaker and general manager.
Foster has been cited as one of the top winemakers in the United States by Wine Advocate, Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast, The New York Times and multiple industry publications. In 2013, he was named one of the top 100 Most Influential U.S. Winemakers by Michael Cervin at IntoWine.com.
At J. Bookwalter, Foster has been responsible for some of the winery’s finest wines, including the 2015 Readers cabernet sauvignon which in 2018 was named one of the top 100 wines in the world by Wine Spectator magazine.

VINEYARD: BLACKWOOD CANYON | WINEMAKERS: PHILLIPE MELKA, MAAYAN KOSCHITZKY, EVEN JOHANSEN | AVA: RED MOUNTAIN
Driven by passion. Nurtured by family. Inspired by Red Mountain.
In 1956, the Aquilini family left their hometown in Brescia, Italy and travelled to North America seeking a new life. Over fifty years later of trials and tribulations, the Aquilinis cultivate their grapes with meticulous attention to detail whether it be in the Red Mountain AVA, or the more recently acquired Columbia Valley and Horse Heaven Hills AVAs. The Aquilinis craft their wines with this same attention to detail, they have released seven brands to date and received over 40 90pt+ scores.
Red Mountain’s great
strength is its Cabernet Sauvignon. The Aquilinis had such faith in this
variety that they planted nearly 70% of the acres with Cabernet Sauvignon and
10 different clones were selected to offer a full spectrum of blending
possibilities. The wines are commonly aged for 24 months as separate lots in
new French Oak.
At the guidance of the renowned consulting winemakers at Atelier Melka, in-house winemaker Evan Johansen, and an elite vineyard team led by Andrew Schultz, the Aquilini vision is to express the best of Red Mountain through an unwavering commitment to quality. Parker rated Aquilini in the Top 100 Wine Finds of 2020, further proving their commitment to putting excellence in the bottle.
About The Winemakers:
Philippe has the rare combination of talent and good fortune to be a winemaker who started at the top: his first jobs out of school were at Petrus and Dominus. His resumé has remained at that storied level, with over 30 years of experience with renowned wineries primarily in Bordeaux and Napa Valley. Napa’s soils proved to be a revelation, so he set out traveling, dividing time between soil study and winemaking at renowned wineries Badia a Coltibuono in Chianti and Chittering Estate in Australia. In 1995 having returned to Napa full time, Philippe founded Atelier Melka, where he has served as winemaking consultant for some of the most highly regarded properties in the US and around the world.
Maayan has amassed an impressive winemaking resume, beginning in the vineyards of Israel with iconic producer Margalit Winery, and working alongside some of Napa Valley’s top winemakers at Screaming Eagle and Dalla Valle. In 2014 Maayan joined Atelier Melka, a consultancy specializing in small production, handcrafted, high-end wines, where has been the Director of Winemaking since 2016. He brings a dynamic array of talents to the Melka team. With a background in Engineering and years of experience in both wineries and vineyards, Maayan plays a multifaceted role at Atelier Melka involved not only in winemaking and operations but design and implementation of winery development.
Even’s passion for winemaking began in 2012, when he convinced his parents to plant 100 vines each of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon on their property — the best way to learn how to establish a vineyard, he reasoned. His education continued at Walla Walla’s acclaimed Institute for Enology and Viticulture, and at a number of wineries — Bergevin Lane, Tertulia Cellars, Tero Estates and Long Shadow’s among them. With his education complete, Even began working for K-Vintners, but after moving them to Seattle, and several months of steady gray skies and soul-crushing traffic, he returned to the warmth and wind swept hills of Eastern Washington's famed Red Mountain, where he is currently the Aquilini Winemaker under the direction of Atelier Melka.
VINEYARD: STILLWATER CREEK | WINEMAKER: ERICA ORR | AVA: ROYAL SLOPE
Founded by Lance Baer in 2003, the first vintage of the winery’s signature blend, Ursa, was released. Ursa, a feminine expression of red wine, predominantly Merlot and Cabernet Franc, was soon followed by Arctos, a bolder Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend. Sadly, our founder, son, brother and friend, Lance Baer, passed away in May of 2007, at the age of 39. But the Baer family, Lisa and Les, with the expertise of consulting winemaker Erica Orr, are continuing to produce the wines that Lance was devoted to creating, as well as continuing to evolve and add new blends to the winery’s line-up.
About The Winemaker:
Erica Orr has worked in the wine industry since 1998. Her first harvest was with Cathy Corison in the Napa Valley. That experience prompted Erica to enroll in the enology master’s degree program at UC Davis where she researched the indigenous yeast microflora in native chardonnay barrel fermentations. She completed her master’s degree in 2003.
As a San Francisco Bay Area native, she is passionate about food and wine, and dedicated to quality-oriented, thoughtful winemaking.
